Alex Wang

Alex Wang is a research scientist I in the medicinal chemistry group in the Cancer Program at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, working under the direction of J.T. Neal. The goal of his research is to understand the impact of variants of uncertain significance in cancer-associated genes in terms of how these variants affect gene function, tumorigenesis, and therapeutic response. He uses deep mutational scanning, where every possible amino acid change at each position in a protein is produced. Instead of just focusing on a handful of the most frequent hotspot mutations, this method allows him and his colleagues to systematically assess the function of every possible variant.

Wang joined the Broad Institute in 2019 after completing postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular and cell biology from Cornell University and holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Florida. During his undergraduate studies, he interned at NIH/NIAAA’s Laboratory of Neurogenetics.
