Primer: How philosophy of science can help us better deploy machine learning in biology

May 16, 2018
Lander Lab, Broad Institute

The scope of machine learning applications have increased dramatically in recent years and have captured the attention of many biological researchers. Will new efforts in machine learning only enable new predictive capabilities or could these tools contribute to new ways of observing and reasoning about biological systems? This primer explores concepts from philosophy of science that can help to orient researchers and evaluate how machine learning may add explanatory power to models of biology in addition to improving prediction.
