Diagnostic tools for classifying patients with diffused large B-cell lymphoma – the most prevalent subtype of lymphoma in adults – and predicting treatment outcome are limited. The molecular mechanisms underlying this disease are poorly understood.
Arthur and his colleagues at the Broad Institute, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute analyzed expression profiles of microRNAs (miRNAs) across the genome of lymphoma cells and normal B cells. MiRNAs regulate gene expression, inform cancer diagnosis, and potentially play a role in tumorigenesis. The study revealed distinct miRNA expression profiles differentiating B-cell development stages, classifying primary lymphoma samples, and grouping lymphoma cell lines. These findings highlight the potential use of miRNA expression profiling in lymphoma diagnosis and prognosis, and suggests that miRNAs may play important causal roles in B-cell development and in lymphomagenesis.

This summer, I was fortunate to be immersed in the cutting-edge technology and innovative research at the Broad Institute. I am most impressed with the collaborative environment of the Broad, and my experience in the program will surely help me in future classes and research.
