Jonna Grimsby, Ph.D.

Jonna Grimsby works under the direction of Brendan Blumenstiel as a senior process development scientist within the R&D Group of the Genomics Platform at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Her key role is to support emerging scientific needs within the institute. In this role, Grimsby has worked to optimize and develop various lab processes including a high throughput SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) viral diagnostic assay,  targeted mutation validation panels, single cell RNA sequencing, DNA fingerprinting, malaria amplicon sequencing, cancer liquid biopsy, and microbial whole genome sequencing.

Grimsby joined the Broad Institute in June 2011 as a molecular biologist, transitioned into the role of research scientist in 2017, and moved into her current post in July of 2019. Prior to joining the Broad Institute, Grimsby was a postdoctoral research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she worked in the General Medicine Division on research related to the genetics of type 2 diabetes. Before embarking on her doctoral studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston, she worked as a research technician in the Dryja Lab at Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Ocular Molecular Genetics Institute, where she contributed to research on the Mendelian genetics of inherited degenerative eye diseases.

Grimsby holds a Ph.D. in environmental biology with a focus in plant population genetics from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a B.A. in biology from Connecticut College.
