Ethical licensing considerations for CRISPR genome editing

Just as in biomedicine, the use of genome editing in agriculture raises important ethical and safety concerns. Our licenses on biomedical applications of CRISPR genome-editing technologies do not permit their use for human germline editing. For agriculture use, the Broad Institute consulted with external experts and decided to make available non-exclusive research and commercial licenses for the use of CRISPR technology in agriculture — but with important restrictions, outlined below.
