René Salazar, M.D.
Chief Equity Officer
René Salazar, M.D., was the chief equity officer at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Prior to joining the Broad, Salazar was the assistant dean for diversity and professor of medical education and internal medicine at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. In this role, he established the Dell Med Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and led a team responsible for developing programs to increase the recruitment and retention of individuals from groups historically underrepresented in medicine.
In addition to developing and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, Salazar was an experienced clinician and medical educator. He presented his work at national meetings including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Society of Hospital Medicine. His work has also been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered.
Salazar was a graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. After residency, he completed a one-year Latino health disparities research fellowship, then joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at UCSF where he was on faculty from 2003 to 2016.
