MIA weekly meetings feature a primer, breakfast, seminar, and discussion; these meetings are interactive and have a pedagogical focus. Instead of an emphasis on research results, speakers dive into the methods — their mechanics, intuition, and philosophy — in the context of their research, so that participants can leave the talk having absorbed new ideas and potentially apply them in their own research. Other MIA functions include hosting workshops, developing educational resources, advising leadership, and supporting the computational community. Schmidt Center fellows are actively involved in the organization of talks, taking on roles in the Initiative’s steering committee.
