Scientific Research

The Broad Institute’s organizational structure is unique among biomedical research institutions. You’ll find four types of units: core member and institute member laboratoriesscientific programsdisease programs, and technology areas. Scientists within these units work closely together — and with other collaborators around the world — to tackle critical problems in human biology and disease.

Core members of the Broad Institute lead laboratories consisting of students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientific staff. These laboratories are similar in structure and membership to laboratories at academic institutions. However, rather than being embedded in a single department, core member laboratories are physically adjacent to scientists from other disciplines and core members work collaboratively with researchers both within and outside of the institute across a range of critical projects.

Our scientific programs and initiatives bring together communities of academic and professional staff scientists who share a commitment to developing transformative new approaches to biomedical research, to understanding the fundamental basis of genome and cell biology, and to advancing knowledge and practice in diseases with unmet medical need.

In addition, our scientific platforms are made up of teams of professional scientists who focus on the discovery, development, and optimization of critical technological tools. Scientists at the Broad and around the world use those tools to obtain massive amounts of data and leverage it for biological insights and drug development. Platform scientists have the expertise and organization to carry out major projects that could not be done within a single research laboratory, and work closely with the scientific programs and other collaborators to tackle critical questions in human biology and disease.
