Jose Perez, M.D., Ph.D.

Jose R. Perez is a director in the Center for the Development of Therapeutics (CDoT) leading a cellular pharmacology team. The CDoT group is charged with the identification and development of early-stage therapeutic compounds in collaboration with scientists both internal and external to the Broad Institute. The team builds biological assays to identify compounds that meet the necessary criteria to modulate target disease biology in a way that would benefit a patient. These lead compounds are then further improved through reiterative rounds of medicinal chemistry to optimize compound potency, selectivity, and physical chemical properties. Ultimately, the best compounds with the correct activities and chemical properties will be tested in an appropriate model of human disease.

Perez received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Albright College before pursuing his Ph.D. in that field from the University of Vermont, School of Medicine. His postdoctoral training took place in the Department of Oncology at Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., a position that later led to employment as a principal research investigator at Pfizer’s Global Research & Development unit. Perez joined the Broad Institute in 2009 as manager of assay and early candidate development before moving into the director position in 2014. His main areas of expertise are in molecular & cellular biology and pharmacology, with therapeutic experience in the inflammation/immunology and oncology areas. Other skill sets include biochemistry and enzymology.
