Helen applied to the Broad Summer Scholars Program to get an authentic research experience. Although she has always been interested in science, she wanted exposure to what a job in research would really be like to better assess if she wanted to pursue that type of career.

Helen’s project involved treating prostate cancer cell lines with novel drugs to confirm predictions made by the connectivity map, a research effort at the Broad that links gene patterns associated with disease to corresponding patterns produced by drug candidates and a variety of genetic manipulations.

BSSP helped Helen learn more about a future career in research and medicine, and solidified her excitement and love for science. “It inspired me to push myself to get where I want to, because personally speaking, it must feel great to be able to have such a rewarding career,” said Helen.
