Charles Vanderburg, Ph.D.
Senior Research Scientist
Charles Vanderburg is a senior research scientist in the Macosko Lab of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. With his background in neuroanatomy and molecular pathology, Vanderburg has developed a repertoire of technical and analytical skills that allows him to identify, procure, and process micro-scale histopathological regions from brains and other tissues. He is currently working to create single-cell expression atlases of the human brain in health and disease, which has exciting potential for extrapolation to human neuropathological and psychiatric conditions.
Prior to joining the Broad Institute in 2018, Vanderburg was director of the Advanced Tissue Resource Center at Harvard NeuroDiscovery Center, with a concurrent appointment at the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. He was also an associate professor at the Center for Interprofessional Studies and Innovation of the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He has prior experience as a research program analyst for Partners Healthcare and held a 5-year fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
Vanderburg obtained his Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology (mentor Elizabeth D. Hay) at Harvard Medical School. He also holds an M.B.A./M.S. from the Biotechnology Executive Program at Seton Hall University and a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.
