Career Profile: Scott Vafai

Physician-scientist Scott Vafai is the director of MITRA, a research group at the Broad Institute that is focused on discovering novel mitochondrial therapeutics. Scott began attending research seminars at the Broad while he was a medical student at Harvard, and it has been exciting for him to see the Broad grow and evolve over the years. He enjoys working with a team of talented, dedicated, and passionate research scientists at the Broad.

Scott and his wife welcomed their first child in the fall of 2016. They are passionate about the outdoors, and they like to hike in southern Vermont and New Hampshire. In his free time, Scott additionally enjoys running along the Charles River, playing tennis, and listening to music. A native of Edison, N.J., Scott says his most important role models are his parents.

Scott enjoys cooking, so he prefers to play chef at home instead of dining out. Scott would one day like to visit Greece to tour the country’s ancient ruins and see the Greek Islands, but he is happy to spend summers in New England cooking and eating outdoors, sampling abundant local produce, and taking weekend trips to local beach towns.
