Program Details and Application Guidelines

Program Details

Broad’s artist-in-residence program offers artists the opportunity to engage with Broad scientists and staff to develop a new collaborative project. Start date and appointment duration are determined by the selected artist with program staff. Typically, artists are in residence for at least one year.

Artists receive:

  • access to all of our buildings, events, and communal workspaces
  • a Broad email address and phone number
  • a one-time payment of $20,000
  • reimbursement for project materials up to $10,000

Artists may also share new, existing, or in-progress work with the Broad Community as part of the Broad Institute’s gallery program and/or host a public talk or other event.

Our program does not include studio space, housing, or travel costs, so artists within commuting distance from Cambridge, MA have traditionally benefited most from the program. Broad Institute does not offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity.

Broad Institute seeks mid-career artists who are deeply interested in Broad’s scientific work. We have historically worked with visual artists but are open to considering applications from artists in other disciplines as well.

The primary criteria for selection are:

  1. A demonstrable curiosity about Broad Institute science
  2. Evidence of successful multi-disciplinary collaboration
  3. A compelling body of artistic work

Broad Institute’s Artist-in-Residence program is an experiment. As the program evolves, we will refine the program details and application process to ensure we continue to serve the Broad’s mission effectively.
