Smoller’s work centers on identifying the genetic determinants of childhood and adult psychiatric disorders. Smoller has studied the genetic underpinnings of anxiety, bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia. Smoller and his colleagues also seek to identify genetic predictors of a patient’s response to treatment and are interested in the ways in which advances in genetics may impact the clinical practice of psychiatry.

Smoller earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed residency training in psychiatry at McLean Hospital. Smoller received his masters and doctoral degrees in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the National Institute of Mental Health Training Program in Psychiatric Genetics.
