 Sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Workshop for Clinical Investigators on the Genetics of Complex Disorders November 22 - 24 | 2009 Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard Cambridge, MA Recent advances in genetics offer new insights into diseases and have the potential to reshape the clinical landscape. Yet, translating these discoveries into clinical applications remains a major challenge and requires the participation and leadership of individuals and teams involved in patient-centered research. The aim of the course is to enhance trainees' understanding of current genetics methodologies used to study complex disorders with an emphasis on clinical translation. And thanks to the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, registration for this course is FREE and all enrolled will receive a stipend for travel expenses. About the Course This three-day course, for a select 20 participants, includes a mix of lectures, symposia, computer workshops, and clinical vignettes designed to highlight genetics applications in the study and treatment of common medical conditions. The general course outline includes an introduction to human genetic variation, the tools used in genomic analysis, the clinical translation of genetic associations, and the broader social implications of human genomics. Participating faculty work on the interface of genetics and medicine and come from Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Broad Institute and other distinguished institutions. The Application Applicants must hold an advanced degree or be in enrolled in a doctoral program. Direct involvement in patient-centered research with current or planned projects in the genetics of complex disorders will be viewed most favorably.
