The above map shows relative rates of type 2 diabetes in countries in the Americas. By studying Mexican and Latin American populations, the SIGMA Type 2 Diabetes Consortium uncovered a new genetic risk factor for type 2 diabetes that could account for as much as 20 percent of the populations’ increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes — the origins of which are not well understood.
