Overview
COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST, Broad Institute-Genome Sequencing and Analysis Group, Medical Population Genetics Program to conceive and develop algorithms and analysis approaches to solve the key challenges for emerging DNA sequencing technologies, instantiate these ideas in usable software tools, and apply these tools to flagship Program projects like 1000 Genomes with revolutionary implications in human medical genetics. Will join a lively team and wider community of computational biologists, medical geneticists, and software engineers dedicated to creating a general-purpose toolkit for applying next-generation DNA sequencing to medical genetics.
Requirements
Exceptionally deep computational and analytic abilities demonstrated by a top-tier Ph.D. in the life sciences with significant programming and algorithm development experience or a top-tier Ph.D. in math, physics, computer science, or related field and familiarity with biological research problems. Must have track record of high-quality computational research. Must possess excellent general computational and programming skills; familiarity with Java (or C/C++), Python (or Perl), and analysis tools like MATLAB and/or R. Prior biological research experience a plus. Must be capable of understanding and translating high-level scientific goals into concrete computational approaches. Excellent oral and written English communication skills required. Must be capable of working in an interactive team environment while conducting self-directed research within broader goals set by group.
Characteristic duties
Characteristic duties include: applying computational techniques and biological domain knowledge to design and implement analysis tools to solve complex computational and mathematical problems; envisioning new algorithms and new approaches to data analysis; rapidly prototyping these ideas, validating their value on novel data sets, and implementing and optimizing successful algorithms for use by the broader community; working collaboratively with other scientists on computational research in a fast-paced environment; and preparing written reports and presentations for internal use and publication. Must enable the research of other program scientists though excellent communication, teamwork, and a focus on creating usable and accessible research software tools.
