Overview
COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST, Broad Institute-Genome Sequencing and Analysis Group, Medical Population Genetics Program to conceive and develop analysis approaches to solve the key challenges for emerging DNA sequencing technologies, instantiate these ideas in widely-used software tools, and apply these tools to analyze new sequencing and genotyping technologies and flagship Program projects like 1000 Genomes and Exome Sequencing Projects. Join a lively team and wider community of computational biologists, medical geneticists, and software engineers dedicated to realizing the revolutionary implications of next-generation DNA sequencing in human medical genetics.
Characteristic duties
Characteristic duties include: lead analysis projects on topics from technology development to medical genetic screens for rare disease-causing mutations; apply computational techniques and biological domain knowledge to design and implement analysis tools to solve complex computational and statistical problems; envision new algorithms and new approaches to data analysis; rapidly prototype these ideas and validate their value on novel data sets; implement and optimize successful algorithms for use by the broader community as part of a general-purpose toolkit for next-generation DNA sequencing analysis; work collaboratively with other scientists on computational research in a fast-paced environment; prepare written reports and presentations for internal use and publication. Must enable the research of other program scientists though excellent communication, teamwork, and a focus on creating usable and accessible research software tools.
Requirements
Exceptionally deep computational and analytic abilities demonstrated by a top-tier Ph.D. in the life sciences with significant programming experience or a top-tier Ph.D. in math, physics, computer science, or related field and familiarity with biological research problems. Must have track record of high-quality computational research, including publication in peer-reviewed journals. Must possess excellent general computational and programming skills; familiarity with Java (or C/C++), Python (or Perl), and analysis tools like MATLAB and/or R. Prior biological research experience a plus, knowledge of genetics a big plus. Must be capable of understanding and translating high-level scientific goals into concrete computational approaches. Excellent oral and written English communication skills required. Must be capable of working in a rapidly changing environment as part of an interactive team of platform staff and academic trainees while conducting self-directed research within broader goals set by group.
