Applying to the Summer Research Program in Genomics

Dear Potential Applicant for SRPG 2012,

The application deadline for our SRPG 2012 cohort has now passed. The Broad's SRPG is a National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) funded research education program to support undergraduates who are underrepresented minorities. These are individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, which includes American Indians or Alaska Natives, blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders; and individuals with disabilities.

Application requirements

To be eligible for our program, you must meet ALL of the following requirements. Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in a four-year college for the fall of 2012
  • Major in physical, biological sciences, computer sciences, engineering, or mathematics
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Be a member of one of the underrepresented groups the NHGRI supports.

Submission instructions
The SRPG application consists of six items:

2. Description of Previous Research Submit Online
  Briefly describe any non-course related research experience you have had as an undergraduate, including lab experiences, data compilation and analysis, and any other research activities. Include the names of faculty or principal investigators, duration of your participation, the larger goals of the research, and your specific role.  
3. Summer Program and Educational Objectives Statement Submit Online
  In a statement of up to two pages in length (with your name at the top of each page) answer the following:
  • What are your educational and career plans and what contributions do you hope to make to your chosen field of study?
  • What are your current scientific and research interests; and their overlap with the Broad's research activities?
  • What are your reasons for applying to the program?
  • What will you contribute to the program?
  • If you are a returning student, why is spending another summer at the Broad crucial to achieving your goals?

Your two letters of recommendation can be mailed to the address above or emailed directly to diversity@broadinstitute.org.

Items 1, 2, 3, and 4 should be submitted during one online session.
Items 2, 3, and 4 should be submitted as a single PDF containing all three components and uploaded during this one online session. Please name the file as follows: lastname.firstname-srpg2012.pdf.
