An analysis appearing in the March 2011 issue of Nature Medicine showed that two TCGA papers were the third most (2008) and seventh most cited (2010) peer-reviewed research papers on cancer. The authors of the analysis searched the Scopus database for papers containing the term ‘cancer’. They excluded reviews and epidemiological studies. They conducted the search for the years 2008, 2009, and 2010.
From a list of the 26 most cited papers in 2008, TCGA’s paper, Comprehensive genomic characterization defines human glioblastoma genes and core pathways (Nature. 455(7216):1061-1068) was the third most cited paper, with 534 instances of authors citing it. From a list of the 31 most cited papers in 2010, TCGA’s paper, Integrated genomic analysis identifies clinically relevant subtypes of glioblastoma characterized by abnormalities in PDGFRA, IDH1, EGFR, and NF1 (Cancer Cell. 17(1):98-110), was the seventh most cited paper, having been cited 65 times.
Cancer genomics –related papers dominated the lists, pointing to the relevance of genomics in cancer research today. The highly-cited nature of the TCGA papers underlines their importance to the cancer field in advancing knowledge about the genomics of glioblastoma multiforme.
