Nomination Process and Sample Selection

Nominations for sequencing were solicited from the marine viral and microbial ecology research community and were considered for their scientific merit, the potential for new discoveries, and other factors such as isolate diversity, sample uniqueness and the availability of environmental metadata.

The criteria for nomination included:

  1. For isolates, host must be a marine microbe (bacteria, archaea, or unicellular eukaryote)*
  2. Viromes must be of marine origin*
  3. All nucleic acid types acceptable

* Non-marine samples could be nominated if they would provide insight into marine virus ecology and evolution.

Nominations were compiled by MMI and reviewed by the Selection Committee, a panel of five marine virus ecology experts. Nominations are no longer being accepted.
