Chad Nusbaum

Chad Nusbaum is co-director of the Genome Sequencing and Analysis program at the Broad Institute. He is responsible for development, implementation and application of new sequencing technologies. He also leads several microbial and fungal genome projects including the potato blight Phytophthora infestans.
In 1996, Chad joined the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research, now part of the Broad Institute, as a research scientist involved in the creation of genome-wide maps for human and mouse. Then, as part of the pilot project for human genome sequencing that pioneeredhigh-throughput methods for large-scale sequencing, he was responsible for building and leading the sequence finishing team. In 2001, he became co-director of the Genome Sequencing and Analysis program and, together with Bruce Birren, managed the center’s contribution to the sequencing of the human genome.
Chad received his postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley, in plant genetics. After that, he was a project leader in diabetes gene mapping at Mercator Genetics, Inc.
